5 things to see at Celtic Connections

Hazy Recollections (Sundays at 1pm during Celtic Connections) – O2 ABC

Hazy Recollections events have long been on our radar at Elba and it’s always pleasing to see them return year on year to add some Sunday afternoon respite after the Saturday night before. The first HR of the festival takes place this Sunday and features one of our favourite bands here at Elba, The Hazey Janes.

The Pictish Trail & Sweet Baboo – The Glasgow Art Club

Sweet Baboo charmed the pants off us when he played at Randolph’s Leap’s album launch in spring last year and we can only imagine with the added parts of The Pictish Trail that this may be akin to some sort of musically brilliant stand-up show. We mean that in the very very best way, I promise.

Thursday 20th January
King Creosote performs ‘From Scotland With Love’ with support from Tiny Ruins – Royal Concert Hall

In a year where our nation dominated headlines and an amazing sense of national pride was evident whether you were a Yes or No voter, one of the most poignant pieces of culture which grabbed the attention was the collaboration between King Creosote and filmmaker Virginia Heath. ‘From Scotland With Love’ is a collection of archive footage was bound together with KC’s trademark stylings to create a snapshot of the history of this bonnie land in which we live. Support comes from the excellent Tiny Ruins.

Konono No.1 + Bombino – O2 ABC

There’s something for everyone in this Congolese collective. Traditional methods fused with distorted electronics and instruments made from old cars, this gig won’t be your run of the mill evening out in Glasgow.

Promoters. Put on Francois & The Atlas Mountains in Glasgow and I promise I will continue to come along, bringing a new convert every time. Consistently one of the best and most entertaining live bands you’ll ever see, there is nothing that will keep me away from this gig. Support comes from the ever braw Kid Canaveral.

2014 – A round-up of sorts and our favourite albums

FullSizeRenderElba have been quiet as the proverbial mouse this year but we’ve been making plenty of noise elsewhere. Travelling to all corners of this wonderful country we call home having been invited on a musical journey as well as going coast to coast on the other side of the Atlantic, we’ve pretty much exhausted ourselves to the point of when we did actually have a minute to ourselves, we had no energy to share our thoughts. Gladly though, 2014 has again been an excellent year for music, both locally and within our wider universe.

As well as a raft of albums that we’ll hold dear to our heart for many a year to come, we’ve experienced some gigs and musical moments which will live long in the memory. Too many to mention all of, and some maybe a bit too personal to share.

We started the year off in wonder at Mogwai’s ‘Rave Tapes’ album and were lucky enough to squeeze into the CCA for an intimate performance by the band, that was broadcast live for Vic Galloway’s Celtic Connections special. We ended the year in equally mindblowing style listening again and again to the ‘tour de force’ which is The Twilight Sad’s ‘Nobody Wants To Be Here & Nobody Wants To Leave’ which was followed up by a breathtaking and emotional show at the ABC.

Along the way, we had a ball at some of Glasgow’s best ‘day-fests’. Stag & Dagger saw great performances by Honeyblood, Courtney Barnett, Jungle and Los Campesinos!, whilst in the fading summer there was nowhere we’d have rather been than at the East End Social’s Last Big Weekend. Mogwai (again), Honeyblood (again), The Wedding Present, Swervedriver and The Twilight Sad (again) closing out an excellent programme of events.

Some of our favourite local labels once again released a catalogue of gems. In the East, Song, By Toad released great albums by Bastard Mountain and Jonnie Common, whilst in the West, albums by Dan Lyth, Chris Devotion & The Expectations and The Hazey Janes made it another top quality year in the Armellodie stable.

2014 started with lots of ambition and positivity and whilst it ended in near burn-out, we had a great rollercoaster ride in between with things that we wont forget.

2015 is just around the corner and once again we have plans, we want to shout a little bit more about music, so how about we talk a little bit more next year?

Sold out shows seem to be the order of this last week. I’m a little sore about not getting a Bill Callahan ticket for this Saturday’s Celtic Connections appearance. Similar tardiness led to missing out on The National’s docu-tour-fam-dram Mistaken For Strangers at the Glasgow Music and Film Festival, which has a delightful musical accompaniment from the second artist on this, our newest mixtape. Not all is lost though because many a Celtic Connections show has been enjoyed by ourselves, including a couple courtesy of BBC Scotland’s live sessions, plus payday rolled around and now there’s a stack of gig tickets waiting to be taken and torn, leaving stubs to be used as bookmarks. Does anyone else do that, or is it just we two (potentially three)?

The band’s scoring of Les Revenants may have been a catalyst for recent popularity, amongst which this week there has been a sold out show at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as well as their single cask whisky selling out at The Good Spirit Co. Whatever the instigator, it is overdue and long may it continue. Enjoy the swift dramatic rumble of Rave Tapes’ album art-track Hexon Bogon.

Rozi Plain – Humans []

Kim: The last entry I made on Elba was a post packed full of information about the Glasgow Music and Film Festival. There was so much detail that the articulation of my overall enthusiasm may have been drowned out. It’s not often that my giddy chatter will be interrupted by such seriousness but I’ll allow it once again here. One of the most desirable events, as expected, was Mistaken For Strangers at The Glad Cafe. Lost Map Records’ Rozi Plain will play after the screening. Alas it’s now sold out but if you are unfamiliar with last year’s Joined Sometimes Unjoined then Humans should unite you.

Richmond Fontaine – Moving Back Home #2

Phil: This weeks excuse to shoehorn an old Richmond Fontaine track on to the mixtape comes in the form of a new piece of writing. Willy Vlautin, frontman of RF has just had his 4th book, ‘The Free’ published in the US and UK so I thought it was a good excuse to put on one of my favourite tracks. Vlautin’s writing is pretty reminiscent of his songwriting, tales of America set against (mostly) bleak backgrounds. I love reading his books and strangely, for all the gloom and hardship that he writes about, it really makes me want to go on a midwest road trip. Not only is his fourth book released this year, his first book, The Motel Life, has been made into a film. You can see the trailer here.

Kid Canaveral – Who Would Want to be Loved – []

Phil: I’m still muddling through my albums of 2013 for the Scottish BAMS vote and Kid Canaveral’s ‘Now That You’re A Dancer’ is sure to be in the reckoning. They’re releasing this track on hot pink heart shaped vinyl and if that wasn’t romantic enough, they’re having a Lumber Party at Stereo on February 14th ably assisted by Lost Map label mates, Randolph’s Leap, Malcolm Middleton and on the wheels of steel, The Twilight Sad. Hawt!

Pixies – Greens and Blues

Phil: People seem to be a bit down on the Pixies at the moment. Lamenting the passing of a bass player named Kim, saying they aren’t what they were, yes, there may be some truth in these statements but I couldn’t help listening to their latest EP and thinking that this unashamedly poppy hum-along wouldn’t have been out of place when they were in their celebrated prime. In fact, I’m pretty sure it would have been an indie club floorfiller.

Joanna Gruesome – Wussy Void []

Kim: Hey dreamy vocals over punky sounds. You please me. The Weird Sister LP is rich with such style and also has a track entitled Lemonade Grrrl, which has my heart aflutter. Wussy Plain is toned down Joanna Gruesome and still tries to rip apart your eardrums on the chorus. Joanna Gruesome play alongside Speedy Ortiz and Pinact on 15 February at Broadcast. Ear protection is advisable.

PLANK! -Aphidelity []

Kim: Procrastination has its value. I have discovered that when reading through guidelines and policy gets you down, Twitter is always there to while away the hours. I think it was the artist name and title that first stirred me into further investigation. Then I saw the artwork and HOLY CRAP I WANT TO SEE THAT MOVIE WHERE A GIANT BUG DESTROYS A CITY TO A SCORE OF INTERGALACTIC PROGGY-KRAUT-DISCO! So, PLANK! have written a Moroder meets Murphy instrumental. Now we just need a modern day Carpenter (this might not delight many but Rodriguez springs to mind) to make that film.

Invigorated after the new year? Nope, us either. To do lists are growing by the second and whilst good times are afoot there’s also a bit of trepidation around here about just where we’ll start? Thankfully, music seems to bring us a bit of respite so we’ve chucked together a menagerie of tunes that are helping us get into gear for 2014.

Malcolm Middleton – Red Travellin’ Socks []

Kim: If there were ever a song to make me light of step, it’s Red Travellin’ Socks. Amidst a haze of trekking around Scotland to work on far too many gigs over a short space of time, I have a very vivid memory of watching Malky and band play this live. Some uptempo honesty regarding the tidal push and pull of life on the road was elevated with added violin at the time. As noted above, we’re needing a bit of momentum right now and this is the perfect instigator. Malcolm will be bringing his mostly melancholy sound to Celtic Connections, playing Platform on 25th of January. 

The New Medicants – This Time

Phil: As we alluded to on Monday’s post, The New Mendicants hit Glasgow next weekend as part of Celtic Connections, this track is taken from their Australia EP out last year. Their new album is released on January 27th, two days after they play the aforementioned gig at The Arches.

FOUND – Mullokian (Toad Session) 

Kim: Song By Toad Records are celebrating five years of releases with a very special . Amongst the mass of material contained on the five 12″ albums is a Toad Session recording of FOUND’s debut single Mullokian. It’s a soothing rendition with beautiful rippling guitar; stripped back for the tech tinkers. This was the song that began my love for FOUND. This love can be traced all the way back to 2006 when I was, in my ever delicate manner, shoving the song in the face of Mr Elba (Author’s note: Phil, this is your name now so please expect to be addressed thusly forevermore). Such Elba history makes for a more than solid reason for inclusion on our current mixtape. 

RM Hubbert – Bolt

Phil: A favourite track from 2013, ‘Bolt’ was taken from RM Hubbert’s third album, Breaks and Bone. It’s a reply to a Nicola Roberts song don’t you know which incidentally Hubbert will advise that everyone should own, along with any Minutemen album. RM Hubbert plays the Mitchell Library next Tuesday as part of Celtic Connections

Appletop – Johnny’s Theme [DOWNLOAD]

Phil: Armellodie Records’ latest signing Appletop, are French. They also seem to like Pavement and Teenage Fanclub. You should probably know this pleases me greatly. With a hummable chorus, this song hasn’t left my head so far this year. I’m really looking forward to their album which is due out in spring.

Tideland – Dinosaur

Phil: There’s not too much that I know about Tideland, but I’ve been really enjoying their punky slacker rock sounds over the last few weeks. Hailing from Sterling, Virginia, Tideland released their album, ‘Lull’, on Russian Winter Records last year. Dinosaur is one of several tracks I could have put on the mixtape but being that my compadre, Kim, has a bit of a thing for dinosaurs, this was the obvious choice.

Janelle Monáe (feat. Prince) – Give Em What They Love

Kim: I am intensely drawn to Janelle Monáe’s artistry. There is an almost extinct ambiguity in contemporary music between performing persona and personal life. Where there have been pushes and prods by the media to pinpoint if any of her lyricism is reflective of her character, Monáe has managed to retain a great amount of mystery. Gender and sexuality load what she creates, more so here than on most other tracks. Just as Eryka Badu brought such energy to Q.U.E.E.N., Prince helps to layer on the filth in Give Em What They Love. The bass and melodic synch are core in the first half of this song before it breaks and you can happily lose your shit over the joy of brass, organ, solo guitar and some controlled yells and rasps from The Electric Lady herself. The track flutters out on an orchestral coda, the suite nature of Monáe’s debut returning once again on the 2013 sophomore album.

Celtic Connections 2014

Each year I look forward to Celtic Connections. Each year I tell friends that the line-up is great. Each year I say I’m going to this that and the next thing. Each year I fail to get my act together sufficiently. Each year I only scratch the surface. Each year I vow that next year, I’ll make more of an effort. So this year, I’m going to put together a handy list of some of the things I’m hoping to go to. The festival starts this Thursday, the 16th of January and if the selections below pique your interest enough there is a feast of gigs over on the festival website.

Fri 17th January – Mull Historical Society @ The Arches
Colin MacIntyre’s Mull Historical Society are a long time favourite and have several songs that I’m personally very fond of. This gig will see the performance of his 2001 debut album ‘Loss’, in full.

Tues 21st January – RM Hubbert w/ Aidan Moffat @ The Mitchell Library
Were we a lads mag, there’s a high chance that Hubby would have been our man of the year in 2013, alas we’re not, therefore he’ll just have to settle for being a good dude. Having followed up his SAY Award winning album ‘Thirteen Lost & Found’ with the equally excellent ‘Breaks & Bone’, this will be Hubby’s biggest Glasgow headline show to date. Aided and abetted by the mischevious storytelling of Aidan Moffat, this is a Tuesday night at the library you won’t want to miss.

Sat 25th January – The New Mendicants @ The Arches
Ahead of the release of their debut album, adopted Ontarians Joe Pernice (The Pernice Brothers) and Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) take to the Celtic Connections stage with new material and one would hope some tracks from their back catalogues. As a big Teenage Fanclub fan, only wild horses will keep me away from this one.

Sun 26th January – Olive Grove Showcase @ Oran Mor
An evening curated by local bloggers turned label bosses, the line up here not only includes a very rare performance by The Moth & The Mirror, but also performances by Elba favourites Randolph’s Leap, Jo Mango, and The State Broadcasters.

Mon 27th January – Bobby Womack @ Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
I first came across Bobby Womack on an old blaxploitation compilation which included his song ‘Across 110th Street’. In the last few years he’s become more of a household name after a guest slot on the Gorillaz ‘Plastic Beach’ record which has invigorated Womack, now in his 7th Decade in music.

Sat 1st February – Bill Callahan @ O2 ABC
Hands down the sweatiest gig I’ve ever been too was Bill Callahan at Stereo a few years back. Seems an odd statement, of course, there was no wild mosh pit but combine a midsummer date with a room full of jumpers and beards, and you’ll get why the temperature was so high. Heat aside, Callahan was an excellent performer that evening and IS an excellent songwriter, from Smog to his solo records, so it’s unsurprising that so many people I know snapped tickets up for his straight away.

Re-Mogwai-ed

I like my title for these words. If you consider that a first listen of the band would be to be Mogwai-ed. There would be no state of undoing.  But redoing?  Huh.  I’m not certain.  I’m quite sure that you can’t be Remurdered, in medical terms anyway. What a name though. The first sound of The Rave Tapes came on Monday and can be heard below, courtesy of Rock Action.

 

There are signature Mogwai noises. It’s a teasing build. There are little flares of guitar, the way Mogwai do them best. Where other guitarists would cease their melodic song, here more thought is added; an answer to the question being posed. The percussion jumps in as it pleases. Then, after three minutes of beautiful and sinister sound the moment comes that will have you devoted. Nothing else will matter to you but this song for at least four days*.  Oh and at 3:20 you will find the sound that will deafen you when this track is played live.

Mogwai have announced live dates, beginning in the new year after an ATP appearance, including Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 28th January 2014 as part of Celtic Connections.

The band’s twitter is promising even more news in mere hours. This leaves a little time to head to the band’s website and get a free copy of Remurdered. The Rave Tapes is available for pre-order now and will be released on 20th January 2014.

I like my music indoors

Recently, I have been considering the disparate activities of my flat-mate’s compared to my own. Were I to call upon my favourite bard of the central belt Aidan Moffat to set the scene; his life is the hedonistic romp of The First Big Weekend and he, no doubt, sees my own as the cyclical and serene Cages. My own interpretation of the latter is phrased a little kinder than the current misnomer I’ve been gifted: ‘old lady.’

Such teasing can be entirely attributed to the fact that I consume alcohol in much more reasonable measures than I did whilst at university. Therefore, I reject the implication that I am anything other than the excitable and immature creature that I have always been. That being said, I do have a new appreciation for certain comforts. For instance, the city based festival is something that I’ve always appreciated but now find myself increasingly excited about.

I guess the beauty of the city festival includes accessibility, advanced knowledge of the venue, a good meal being at hand and a warm bed not too far away.  You will not find yourself lacking in lubrication if we compare habits of a ‘major’ outdoor festival should my introduction be instilling this concern. My Triptych days eventually became a sleepless and overworked haze but originally

as an attendee those three to five days the festival spanned were a dreamy, inebriated rapture. The talent, the sounds, the many, many drinks. The festival and the sum of its parts will of course dictate this sort of behaviour. For instance, the Glasgow Film Festival won’t lead to any liver damage, (un)suprisingly(?) Celtic Connections might.

My attention has been drawn once again this year to the Stag and Dagger festival.  It boasts over 50 bands and DJs, seven venues and one ticket. The first acts that have been announced have the Elba ‘we’ salivating; with White Denim, Phantom Band, Django Django, Willy Mason and Bear in Heaven all due on May 19th.

The ticket is a very reasonable £17.50 or was £12.00 if you snatched an early bird price. The previous years’ line up promise another impressive selection of acts. I guess the greatest dilemma you will be faced with is what head line act you choose.  Ultimately you may have to sacrifice some mid evening

bands to guarantee a spot for whichever finisher you have your eye on though it is a small complaint that exists at all festivals; indoor or out.  Perhaps there isn’t so much different about the two, as Aidan says:

A new life is just a new routine,
a new function for the old machine

The Walkmen – Oran Mor 19/01/2011

If you have been reading our blog lately or follow any of us on Twitter, you will know that times have been busy round ‘ol Elba way.  It is with that in mind that I present you with tales of live music, long overdue.  Two astonishing acts in two weeks have left me with a boundless energy and enthusiasm to fill my calendar with adventures new. This year has already been so very good to us.  The time has come to reflect a little.  I will talk about one today, the other later in the week.


The Walkmen are a band that I have always appreciated.  Yet, I feel it is important to note that they are a band who troubled me slightly.  There was something about them that I just did not ‘get’ on record. Often it can take experiencing a band live to finally hammer home what it is you did not (but should have) understood previously.  I learned this at the Oran Mor; a gig that seemed a peculiar but welcome addition to the Celtic Connections 2011 programme. For all the richness of their production, it wasn’t until I was getting battered with their distinct New York twang in person that my eyes widened and I felt like I had finally awoken.

In The New Year was certainly the first song that roused the above revelation and that also put emphasis on how reliant the band are on Hamilton Leithauser’s voice.  Indeed how he manages to retain a voice when the man sings somewhere between a nasal and throaty yell with perfect control and an ability to project an inordinate volume really does leave you wondering.

Latest album Lisbon’s outing was a proud one.  Blue As Your Blood bounced along on its 50s guitar riff. Victory was fantastic live realization of the pivotal ‘sound’ of the album.  While I Shovel The Snow was truly beautiful live; delicately scored with a full band tinkering away, perfecting the distant and subtle delicacies of the song to the reverent crowd. Stranded was played, apologetically, without any brass and was as moving without, as it is with, what you would think to be the pinnacle of the track.

The Rat, of course, rallied the crowd during the encore.  It is a song that speaks greatly to its audience. It is a miserablist and aggressive narrative, entirely indulgent and wholly intoxicating.  The chants around me of the infamous bridge had me wondering what heartache had fallen upon these many men.  You can read this and assume that I am being overly flighty but a lot of the testosterone heavy crowd were croaking as they left the venue as a result of screaming along for those four charged minutes.

Many things about The Walkmen can be appreciated live.  Whether that be their their strength of catalogue or instrumental precision; particular emphasis put on Matt Barrick.  But to appreciate The Walkmen is to live them.

A Quick Catch Up With…Findlay Napier (Hazy Recollections)

Another year and we get to the end of January where Celtic Connections has again whizzed by me and I’ve not gone to see half the things I wanted to. Amongst the standouts in this year’s programme were the weekly Hazy Recollections gigs at the ABC.

Hazy Recollections, as we know it here at Elba, happens every couple of months on a Sunday afternoon and is usually populated by some of the best local indie/folk/roots bands. The thing that stood out with the HR Celtic Connections shows was not only that it was weekly but also the more international make-up of the line up. Local favourites like Julia and The Doogans (no stranger to the good ship Elba) alongside people like Humbert & Humbert, Elba Podcaster AJ Roach and Amelia Curran.

The man behind Hazy Recollections is Findlay Napier, and we caught up with a very busy Findlay ahead of this weekends final Hazy @ Celtic Connections.

For those of us not in the know, please tell us a bit more about Findlay Napier and Hazy Recollections…

At a rehearsal one night Myself, Gillian and Douglas (from The Bar Room Mountaineers) and Blair MacMillan were talking about all the great bands in Glasgow. We felt there were a number of acts whose music met at the boundaries of the indie, folk and roots scenes who were not getting the breaks or exposure they deserved. What began as a one sided all talk and no action rant about the shortfalls of the music industry was transformed by the guys at Vox Populus into an all action positive reality in January 2010.

Hazy Recollections is now about a year old, how did the idea come about and why did you decide to make it an afternoon gig rather than holding it in the evening?

The afternoon gig came about as we had done a few afternoon gigs when touring in Europe and North America. We liked the idea of playing the show then keeping the evening free to chill out. All the shows that we went to like that there was a mixture of all ages, I suppose because there was work in the morning people brought the whole family.

This month HR has become a weekly event as part of Celtic Connections and the line up’s have taken on a bit more of an international feel. How have these gigs been received by the artists and has it inspired you to make future HR events have a less local/scottish line up?

We’ve always wanted to expand and Donald Shaw and the Celtic Connections teams have allowed us to tap into these amazing acts. We knew they were out there but without the weight of a name like that I’m not sure we would have been taken seriously.

The artists have been loving the idea. A lot of them have never played a Sunday afternoon show before so I think they’re surprised when a big crowd shows up to see them. For some bands it strange as they’re not used to silence between songs… people actually listening and really enjoying their music.

You are also the host for the Celtic Connections Late Night Sessions which has seen some pretty special guests this year, what’s been your main highlight?

Fisherman’s Friends last night were great craic. I really enjoyed Aerials Up. If you take a look at my blog, there’s a list of who’s been on. Bettye LaVette’s (fond memories at elba of her appearance at the sadly departed Triptych festival a few years ago) band came down and played a few songs on Sunday night to a hand full of people around 2:30am. They were amazing I wish I could have got them on earlier. I think they were just happy to play. I reckon I could have put them on at 10pm and they’d have played right through. Four of the best musicians I have ever heard… and the first time I’ve heard really good Duane Allman style slide guitar live. The only people I’ve not had at the LNS was Humbert and Humbert who played Hazy on the first weekend their music is beautiful and very moving.

Finally, what does the future hold for Hazy Recollections?

We will keep doing Hazy Recollections. We’re planning a few more through the year and we plan to launch our new record at the next one. I think we’ll move back to Stereo for the next ones as they’ve been really good to us and the layed back vibe of the venue suits the show.

If I were made of money…

…I’d go to all of these gigs. As it is, I’ve got a mortgage and a 3 week old baby so I’ll just have to be content with telling you that you should go to these gigs instead.

Hazy Recollections, dubbed Celtic Connections’ Un-Official Hangover Cure, takes place tomorrow afternoon for the first in it’s series of weekly Celtic Connections residencies at the ABC. If you like your Sunday nights noisy then get yourself along to the Liquid Ship for the first Brain Burner night. It’s free to get in and they are going to attempt 6 bands in the one evening! On the bill are Noma, Guanoman, Messiah Complex, Imperium and Public Spaces and late additions to the bill Roseanne Barrr. The Liquid Ship is tiny so get along early to make sure you get a space!

There seems to be a load of gigs on at the Oran Mor these days and the one that caught the eye this week is The Walkmen. Last year’s ‘Lisbon’ album was excellent so this should be a really good gig!

Friday 21st January

Friday, it’s the official start of the weekend and what a night you could have if you follow these two, easy to follow, steps.

1) Get yourself a ticket for Stereo. The Aye Tunes Blog are embarking on their first solo promotion and have Kochka, BoyGirlAnimalColour and Trapped Mice (fresh from recording at Elba) on the bill. Tickets are £3 in advance and £5 on the door. You can buy advance tickets here and as a wee special present, a sampler of the three bands can be downloaded here.

2) When booted out of 1) at around 10:30pm, hot foot it up Hope Street, along Bath Street and swing by Bloc where you will be just in time for BARmellodie, the new monthly residency from the peeps over at Armellodie. The bands kick off around 11ish and features The Douglas Firs, Battery Face and Le Reno Amps, a band that I have possibly seen more times than healthy. If all that wasn’t enough to put you off, us hipsters from Elba will be spinning some tunes throughout the evening along with the Armellodj’s. FREE until midnight, a bargainous £2 thereafter. We’ll see you at the bar!
