Competition Corner!

30 Sep

As you may have heard us mention our birthday gig is next Friday (8th October) at The Liquid Ship in Glasgow where Cuddly Shark will take to the Elba stage along with Julia and The Doogans, Yusuf Azak, Jonathan Sebastian Knight and Paul McLinden. It kicks off at 8:30pm sharp and it costs nothing to get through the door!!

The chaps at Armellodie have been kind enough to donate a copy of Cuddly Shark’s eponymous 2009 opus to be won by a lucky reader.

Question: Which seminal 70s punk group included members Johnny and C J; both born on the 8th of October?

To be in with a shout of winning, please send your answer, along with your name to competitions@elbasessions.co.uk

The competition closes on Monday 4th October at 5pm.  A winner will be drawn at random and informed by email. Best of luck!!

5, 4, 3, 2, 1…Launch!

24 Sep

I posted at the tail end of last week about the RE:Peater records launch night and i’ve got another couple of launches this week to fill your Friday night, should you be at a loose end. This appears to be as close to a regular Elba blog feature as you’re gonna get!

First up, here in Glasgow, the brilliantly named Zoobizaretta launch their forthcoming album, Foam & Leachate, with a show at the Captains Rest. They will be supported by White Heath and tickets are a measly £2, there really doesn’t seem like much reason not to go! They will also be in Edinburgh tomorrow at Sneaky Pete’s alongside the much loved, here at Elba, Loch Awe.

Over in the capital, The Scottish Enlightenment release another EP in what is becoming ‘a big tease of a run up’ to the album release late in the year. They release the Little Sleep EP on Monday 27th on Armellodie and will take to the floor at Sneaky Pete’s tonight along with support from Dan Lyth and Moon Junk. I believe, DHL permitting, there should be EP’s on sale this evening!

For The Widows In Paradise – An Ode, of sorts…

20 Sep

Don’t you hate when someone asks what kind of music you’re into? If you are anything like me, it’s a bloody hard question to answer and one which would take some considerable time to get to the bottom of. With that in mind, I can only imagine the horror on my Elba colleagues’ faces when I emailed them and said, ‘look I’m putting together a blog post, mail me back with a couple of words explanation to the above question’. The question in question…

“what’s your favourite Sufjan Stevens album?”

…for this is a question with no discernible answer.

We have tried though, battling with different parts of our musical persona, giving full listens to albums, making cases with ourselves about the merits of different tracks, and I think, we’ve come to a conclusion of sorts. The conclusion being that there is no ‘favourite album’. However, in the interests of not leaving this post hanging on that very note we’ve noted down some ideas, gun to our head, here’s our favourite Sufjan albums. (remember, not really favourite, I mean don’t hold us to that or anything!).

Kim

My love and allegiance to Sufjan Stevens is known far and wide. This is not an over-reaching statement. I receive email, facebook and textual (heh) updates on nigh his every move from a number of sources. Therefore, when asked to pick my favourite album of his, I found myself incredibly torn. This is because I have a sonic love, a lyrical love, a love for songs independent of which album they originate. That being said, each of his releases offers something individual as a body, whilst still undeniably being so very Sufjan. After much consideration and inner turmoil, I present to you my favourite Sufjan Stevens album:

Illinois is the obvious choice, yes I’ll admit. Critically, it is his most well received work. It is, however, very easy to see why. The album honours the state so vastly and features locales, incidents, individuals, whether real or fictitious and of the best and worst moral incline, religious reference and personal prose. It may not be an true representation of The Land of Lincoln but I have not a qualm with that. It is a beautiful portrait. There is a careful balance of the Sufjan seen before and development into something more. The piousness of Seven Swans and solomness of Michigan are still felt but something quirkier and more playful became a undeniable part to making this his most treasured release. This is felt with the wider instrumental range involved, playing nicely to Stevens’ scoring. Holistically, it is more accessible than any other full length release from the artist.
To put it simply, Illinois fills me with a sort of wonder. Tales weave through this work. Even the saddest songs make me want to sit down cross legged, wide eyed with my hands propped under my chin and listen intently. The most joyous make me break into full smile. The most personal, one in particular that is shared with a dear friend in our mutual love for it, can reduce me to tears. Come on, feel the Illinoise!

And another vote for this particular opus from Chris

Ok, so firstly this wasn’t easy. My real answer is his fictional ‘Greatest Hits’ playlist that I have on my iPod which contains 3 to 4 tracks from all albums. However, Illinois was the first of his albums that I bought, combine that with the Oran Mor gig months later (hands down one of my favourite gigs ever) and your onto a winner. My favourite thing about music is lyrics and Illinois is quite simply an album of stories…flawless! Notable mention to Seven Swans which was a close 2nd.

We’ll add a little variance to this post I think, my pick is…

The BQE. It was my instant reaction to the question which then clouded my judgement seconds later when I thought, no wait, what about ‘The Dress Looks Nice On You’ or ‘Decatur’. The thing is though, I love the whole idea and concept behind The BQE and the fact that he chose to release an album which in his own words ‘refused to incorporate his strongest weapons, the song’. The notion of scoring a film depicting the Brooklyn Queens Expressway is something which very much appeals to me and as an album it is one which I was instantly taken in and captivated by even before it was released. Sure it doesn’t have the stories that Illinois or Seven Swans has but I still think he manages to capture the storytelling essence so prominent in his previous work without uttering a word.

It is with our obvious fondness for Sufjan that we have recently been getting pretty excited by the forthcoming release ‘The Age of Adz’ and have been muchly enjoying the All Delighted People EP, ‘Heirloom’ is a biiiiig favourite. He’s also touring the US at the moment and almost on a weekly basis my heart flutters slightly when I notice a headline announcing yet more Sufjan live dates. Sadly, these have all been North American thus far but we live in hope that he will visit our little corner of rain in Scotland. All is not lost though, we have found a Sufjan fix to tide us over until that time.

‘Widows in Paradise’ is a celebration of all things Sufjan and they’ve pulled together a fine roster of local musicians to pay homage to our favourite winged singer. The line up includes The Last Battle, Randolph’s Leap, Open Swimmer, Washington Irving, Esperi and Julia and The Doogans (who you can also catch, helping us celebrate our birthday next month). This all takes place on Wednesday 22nd Sept at 7:30pm in Stereo, Glasgow, and you can get your tickets here. There is also the promise of homebaking! Yum!

*Kim would also like to offer a personal apology to The Dress Looks Nice On You, A Winner Needs a Wand, For The Widows in Paradise, Vito’s Ordination Song and many, many others for betraying them and going for Illinois.

Skibunny – Hugs

19 Sep

Skibunny are an outfit whose reputation most certainly precedes them. Old hat to the touring scene both in their DJ outfit and now with their live band, they are set to follow up their Walk Don’t Walk EP released earlier this summer with debut album ‘Hugs’. The duo are clean electro pop on record, a smile inducing experience that will put a bounce in your step and leave you yearning for those summer hazy days that we didn’t see much of.

Impressively cleaning and taming And So I Watch You From Afar’s Don’t Waste Time Doing Things You Hate into just the most adorable and catchy little anthem and putting even more bop into Tilly and The Wall, their remix style sets out a clear path to their debut album. As an aside, I’m a huge fan of their turning Forward Russia’s Thirteen into a clap along Motown tinged delight.

Skibunny play Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh on the 24th September as well as a few other Scottish dates, which you can find on their myspace page. You can get a free download of album opener Aah Ooh on the band’s website via this link and Hugs is released on 27th September.

Elba Sessions Presents…(Oor Birthday!)

15 Sep

So, the title’s pretty self explanatory I suppose. Elba Sessions turns the ripe old age of 1 this month and to celebrate, well, we’re doing pretty much the same as most other months, putting on a good ol’ gig. We’re actually being a bit greedy and stretching our birthday out for a bit, but October seemed to be the point in 2009 where it all started to come together.

In fact, the first podcast was recorded in July 2009 with Dean Owens of The Felsons. Stephen, the owner of Elba Studios had decided in an effort to get people in to the studio and to give himself a bit more practice, he would invite people in to have a chat about their songwriting, play a couple of songs and then upload the resulting effort to the grand old dinosaur that is Myspace. At the time, Stephen was only in the studio part time so this was a good opportunity to get more bands recording in the studio. Stephen then called on Chris, to do the talking on the podcasts and they recorded a podcast in August ’09 with Pearl & The Puppets.

Myself and Chris had been speaking about putting on our own gigs for literally years, probably since our days at school in Aberdeen, and joining up with Stephen on the back of the studio podcasts seemed the perfect opportunity to do so. We used the Elba name and with the kind help of Dochan McMillan of The Free Candy Sessions, we started our monthly residency at The Liquid Ship in Glasgow’s West End in October 2009.

The blog was a totally different beast altogether. This was a personal thing that I’d been wanting to start for quite a while and this seemed like a good opportunity to get off my backside and do it, plus, i didn’t have to sit for hours thinking of a name I’d come to regret, I just used Elba Sessions! The first blog post went up at the tail end of August 2009 and was a video of a Bill Callahan Black Cab Session. It stayed as the first post whilst we figured out design and layout and ever since it’s contained the odd post here and there, sometimes it’s more regular than other times but life can get busy! We also have had friends who have helped out along the way, Steph sometimes takes pretty pictures and Kim will often write pretty words.

As we come to the end of year one, it’s been nice to reflect on everything that we have seen and done and our birthday gig is really a tribute to our debut year. The premise of the gig was to have the great and the good that we have featured on Elba Sessions, whether it be podcast, gig or blog, over the last year and get them together for a special gig at The Liquid Ship. Unfortunately we couldn’t ask everyone, there was quite simply too many people and we didn’t quite have it in us to organise a five day festival but we’re proud of the line up and hope that you will join us to celebrate a good year, where we have met so many good people who have helped us out, whether it be a mention on their blog, sending us some music to listen to or even the odd follow friday on twitter!!

Without further ado, here’s the poster for our Birthday Night, please come and say hello, we’re a shy bunch really, but a pint or two usually straightens me and Chris out!! It’s free entry as usual and due to the size of line up it’ll be a sharp 9pm start!

Facebook Event Page Here

We’re looking forward to doing this again next year and are especially looking forward to the challenges of keeping it all together for the next year as life gets hectic. Stephen is packed out in the studio and myself and Chris find ourselves in charge of staff in our dayjobs (daunting). I’m also following the blogger Peenko’s good example and will be a father around Christmas time. Maybe the baby can design the posters????

Gigs this week…

6 Sep

Here’s our irregular guide to what we’d go to if money were no object this week. Except of course that September appears to be ‘spend plenty money on gig month’ and I’m actually heading out to a gig this week, and next, and then a couple the week after…

Tuesday (7th Sept)

It appears Tuesday is the night this week that will drag me out of the house as me and Kim are off to the Oran Mor to see The New Pornographers. We are both pretty big fans of Neko Case’s solo stuff so as well as an appearance from her I’m quite looking forward to seeing the band. My knowledge of TNP is patchy but I did really like the first half of their most recent album. It got a bit weird on Side B.

Also…

Emily Jane White/Julia and The Doogans at 13th Note – £6 – We don’t know much about Ms White but the 13th Note’s website describes her as folk/blues/gothic, which appeals. We do however know that we love Julia, and her Doogans.

Wednesday (8th September)

The completely mental but brilliant Super Adventure Club are playing at Bloc. Nuff said.

Also, if you have some pennies saved up or are feeling a little flush, go and see the lovely Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan at the ABC.

Thursday (9th September)

There’s a pretty sweet looking gig over at the 13th Note again featuring some our previous guests at Elba. Kochka, Blue Sky Archives, Campfires In Winter and Jonathan Sebastian Knight set things rocking from 8pm. You can win a pair of tickets over at Aye Tunes.

Friday (10th September)

Upbeat popsters Kid Canaveral kick off the weekend with an appearance at The Captains Rest whilst in a secret location somewhere in Glasgow, there’s a nice wee line up including two of the most technically brilliant musicians we’ve had at Elba, RM Hubbert and Finn Lemarinel, along with noiserv and Esperi. You can get tickets here and find out the location of said secret hideout.

Saturday (11th September)

Well, you could just stay in today. There was plenty to do Tuesday to Friday!!!!

September Podcast – Stephen Cotter

1 Sep

A new month means it’s a good time to release our latest Elba Sessions podcast. Our heid honcho, Stephen chatted to his namesake about influences from the Beatles to Edwin Morgan, how he goes about writing music and plans for the future, including a shiny new EP recorded right here at Elba and hopefully some more shows.

You may have caught Stephen playing at Elba Sessions Presents…(Nine) in August, we put him on as part of our ‘people you may not have heard of’ series so here’s another opportunity for you to acquaint yourself with the man and his songs!
